Character history: Muraki comes from a long line of doctors and is a well-respected physician in his field. Most of his psychological problems date back to his childhood or seem to at least. His mother collected dolls and is seen treating him as one. He collects and loves dolls as well throughout his life. Muraki treats people much like the dolls he keeps.

In the anime, Muraki's half-brother Saki killed Muraki's parents. Saki was shot and Muraki has been obsessed with bringing him back to life ever since just for the pleasure of killing him with his own two hands. Muraki keeps the head of his half-brother alive and searches for a body to attach Saki's head to that will survive the reanimation process. It is through doing research for his grim purpose that he comes across information about Asato Tsuzuki in his grandfather's journals. He becomes obsessed with Tsuzuki's body for various reasons and spends the better part of the anime trying to lure him out by killing people.

One of the most important victims he had was Hisoka Kurosaki. He raped the young man when Hisoka saw him killing underneath a 'blood moon'. Muraki wiped Hisoka's memory of the event with a curse and then took two years to kill Hisoka by making the slow murder/curse look like a fatal illness. Eventually, he confronts Hisoka again when the young man is a shinigami and forces him to remember the night he cursed him while he has Hisoka hostage to use as bait to lure Tsuzuki to him. At the end of the anime, he is wounded badly by Tsuzuki when the shinigami tries to kill himself using Touda's flames. He manages to escape and continue living.

Character personality: Muraki is skilled at manipulation and toying with the lives of others. His polite, charming persona covers a violent serial killer with little remorse or regret in him. He takes pleasure in watching his victims break because of him and in bringing torment to them.

Physical description: Muraki has platinum blond hair and silvery eyes. He's roughly 6'4" and often remarked to be 'beautiful' by those that do not know of his darker side. He looks younger than his age and is muscular enough to show that he takes care of himself.

Magical powers or special skills: Various ones seen in the anime. He can feed on the energy of others in a limited manner. He has been seen to raise at least one dead girl into a zombie. He has teleported into the land of the dead and back out again. He can create and control creatures that are similar to shikigami. The source of his powers is a mystery in the anime.
